Words of Oblivion

I’m a linguist, an explorer of languages, and I’ve always been fascinated by the ancient texts of civilizations long dead. When I heard about a group of archaeologists unearthing a hidden chamber in the ruins of an Egyptian pyramid, I couldn’t resist the chance to see what they had discovered.

What they found was a leather-bound book, its pages yellowed with age and covered in intricate hieroglyphs. It was a dictionary, unlike any I had ever seen, containing words that were not just from the Egyptian language but from a dozen other ancient tongues. And as I turned the pages, I felt a strange energy coursing through me, an awakening of something deep within my mind.

The dictionary was more than just a book; it was a portal to ancient knowledge. As I delved deeper into its pages, my intelligence seemed to grow exponentially. I could grasp complex concepts with ease, and my vocabulary expanded far beyond anything I had ever thought possible.

But with this newfound knowledge came a chilling realization: the dictionary was slowly transforming me into something else. My senses were becoming sharper, my reflexes quickening, and my strength increasing. I was becoming immortal, immune to the ravages of time and disease.

But at what cost? The transformation was also making me more animalistic, my instincts more primal. My hunger became insatiable, and my urges towards violence grew stronger. I was losing touch with my humanity, becoming a monster.

I tried to resist the changes, to fight against the darkness that was consuming me. But it was a losing battle. The more I used the dictionary, the more powerful the transformation became.

One night, I looked at myself in the mirror, and I barely recognized the creature staring back at me. My eyes had turned glowing red, my fangs elongated, and my skin was covered in a thick, dark fur. I was a monster, a creature of the night.

I fled my home, wandering through the dark streets, searching for some place to hide, some way to escape my monstrous fate. But there was no escape. The dictionary was now a part of me, and the transformation was irreversible.

I knew then that I was doomed to a life of eternal torment, trapped in this monstrous form, forever longing for the lost humanity I could never reclaim.

So, I ask you, reader: would you choose immortality, even if it meant becoming a monster?
