With A Deep Breath

The wind howled through the towering peaks of the Canadian Rockies, a mournful symphony that echoed through the desolate valley. I, Detective Sarah Bennett, stood at the edge of the abandoned campsite, the silence punctuated only by the creaking of the wind-battered tents. The sight before me was a stark contrast to the vibrant photographs I had seen on the group’s social media posts. Where once there had been laughter and shared meals, now there was only a chilling emptiness.

The disappearance of the group of six tourists, all experienced hikers, had set off a wave of panic. Their abandoned campsite, devoid of any signs of struggle or forced departure, had deepened the mystery. The authorities had called in me, a fellow hiker with a knack for solving puzzles, to assist in the search.

As I surveyed the campsite, the hairs on my neck stood on end. A sense of foreboding hung heavy in the air, a chilling reminder that I was not alone in this desolate wilderness. The wind whispered secrets through the trees, tales of ancient spirits and the restless dead, making the hairs on my arms stand on end.

With a deep breath, I braced myself for the arduous journey ahead. The missing group had been last seen heading towards the treacherous Devil’s Pass, a narrow trail that snaked its way through a treacherous glacier. I knew that retrace their steps would be a challenge, but I was determined to find them, no matter the cost.

The trail was treacherous, a narrow path carved into the side of the glacier. The wind whipped around me, threatening to pull me off the edge. I clung to the ice, my heart pounding in my chest. The silence was broken only by the occasional snap of ice under my feet.

As I descended deeper into the glacier, a feeling of unease crept over me. The air grew colder, and the silence was oppressive. I could almost feel unseen eyes watching me from the darkness.

Then, I saw it – a figure emerging from the shadows. It was tall and gaunt, its skin pale and lifeless. Its eyes, glowing with an eerie green light, fixed on me. I froze, my breath catching in my throat.

The figure lunged towards me, its movements jerky and unnatural. I stumbled back, my mind racing. This was no hiker, but a creature of the undead, a zombie.

I raised my flashlight, its beam cutting through the darkness. The zombie recoiled, its eyes narrowing. I took the opportunity to make my escape, scrambling back up the trail.

I didn’t look back, the sounds of the zombie’s moans echoing behind me. I ran until my lungs burned and my legs felt like lead. Finally, I collapsed onto a rock, gasping for breath.

The realization hit me like a punch to the gut. The missing tourists had become zombies. They were the creatures I had seen lurking in the shadows, their eyes glowing with an eerie green light.

I had to find them, to stop them before they infected anyone else. But how could I fight a horde of undead creatures in the middle of the Canadian Rockies?
