Am I a Monster?

The Dictionary of Night

I’m in the ancient city of Xibalba, the Underworld. The air is thick with the scent of death and decay. I’m here to find the Dictionary of Night, a forbidden tome said to increase the reader’s intelligence but also turn them slowly into a shapeshifting vampire bat.

I’ve been searching for days, and I’m finally close. I’m in the depths of the Temple of Darkness, where the book is hidden. I’m sweating, my heart pounding in my chest. I feel a strange tingling sensation all over my body.

I find the book in a hidden alcove. It’s made of black leather and has strange symbols etched into its cover. I open it, and a surge of power washes over me. I feel my mind expanding, my thoughts becoming sharper and clearer.

But at the same time, I feel something else. A darkness growing within me. I feel my skin growing cold, my nails lengthening into claws. I feel a longing for blood, for the darkness of night.

I close the book. The darkness recedes, but I know it’s only temporary. The book is changing me, slowly transforming me into a vampire bat.

I leave the temple and return to the surface. I’m afraid of what I’ve become, but I can’t deny the power I feel. I can feel the darkness growing within me, but I’m not afraid.

I fly through the night sky, my senses heightened. I can see in the darkness, hear the faintest sounds. I’m a predator, a creature of the night.

I spot a group of humans. They’re unaware of my presence. I swoop down, my claws outstretched. I feel a surge of bloodlust as I sink my teeth into their flesh.

I drink their blood, and the darkness within me grows stronger. I’m no longer human. I’m a vampire bat, a creature of the night.

I fly back to my lair, a cave deep in the forest. I crawl into a crevice, exhausted but exhilarated. I know that I’m different now, but I’m not sure if I’m better or worse.
