The air is crisp and thin, a sharp contrast to the humid heat of the city. The mountains rise majestically around me, their peaks shrouded in mist. The trail is narrow, winding through dense forests and over rocky terrain, a challenge to experienced hikers like myself.
I’m Detective Alex Ramsey, a grizzled veteran of the local police force with a passion for the great outdoors. When the call came in about the missing hikers, I volunteered for the search party, my instincts telling me this was no ordinary case.
The group, five friends from across the globe, had been reported missing on the popular Mount Assiniboine trail. Their abandoned campsite, with half-eaten meals and scattered belongings, was a chilling sight. It was clear they hadn’t simply decided to abandon their trip.
As we set off into the wilderness, an eerie silence descends. The only sounds are the crunch of our boots on the gravel, the occasional chirp of a bird, and the distant roar of a waterfall. The sun dips below the horizon, casting long shadows that dance menacingly in the fading light.
The trail becomes increasingly treacherous, the path disappearing under thick undergrowth and fallen trees. I fall into a rhythm, my senses heightened, my body reacting instinctively to the challenges of the terrain. But a sense of unease creeps into my mind, a feeling of being watched, followed.
As we reach a particularly narrow section of the trail, I hear a rustle in the bushes. A low growl echoes through the trees. My heart pounds in my chest as I reach for my flashlight. The beam cuts through the darkness, revealing a pair of glowing eyes, followed by a decaying figure emerging from the shadows.
It’s one of the missing hikers, but not as I remember him. His skin is mottled and pale, his eyes sunken and lifeless. His movements are jerky and uncoordinated, his jaws snapping at the air. He lunges at me, his rotting teeth bared, and I stumble backward, narrowly avoiding his grasp.
The others react with shock and fear, their flashlights illuminating the growing horde of undead figures emerging from the darkness. We’re surrounded, trapped in a nightmare of the living dead.
I grip my flashlight tightly, the only weapon I have against these creatures. We form a protective circle, our flashlights casting a dim glow against the encroaching darkness. The moans and growls grow louder, the stench of decaying flesh overwhelming our senses.
I know we have to escape. But the trail behind us is blocked, the path forward swarming with the undead. Our only hope is to fight our way through, to find a way out of this nightmare.
The battle is fierce and bloody. We swing our flashlights, their sharp edges making contact with the decaying flesh. The creatures recoil, momentarily stunned, but they are relentless, their hunger insatiable.
One by one, we fall, succumbing to the overwhelming force. I watch in horror as my friends are devoured, their screams echoing through the mountains. I’m alone now, surrounded by the undead, my flashlight flickering, its beam growing weaker.
I’m trapped, a prisoner of the Dead Trail, my only companions the decaying figures that haunt my every step. I know this is the end, my final moments in this unforgiving wilderness.
