Sturmfrei, adjective
“Sturmfrei Bude” is a fun way to say you have the place to yourself!
- Sturmfrei: Imagine a strong storm. Sturmfrei means safe from the storm, like a cozy house during a bad storm.
- Bude: This is a slang word for “apartment” or “place.”
So, put together, “Sturmfrei Bude” means your apartment is safe from the storm… but really, it means no one else is home and you have the place to yourself!
Sturmfrei Bude ist wenn du in der Wohnung alleine bist. Papa und Mama sind nicht da. Du kannst machen was du willst. So kannst du fernsehen, mit deinen Freunden spielen, oder einfach nur entspannen.
“Finally, freedom! The weekend is here, and the house is sturmfrei for the next two days,” exclaims Jessica in Jochen Till’s coming-of-age novel.
The German word “Sturmfrei” literally translates to “storm-free” and has two main areas of usage.
Historical Context:
In its original and now less common meaning, “Sturmfrei” refers to the ability of a fortification to withstand a siege or assault. It describes a castle or fort that is so well-defended that it is practically impossible to capture by storm.
Modern Colloquial Use:
In everyday German, “Sturmfrei” has taken on a more lighthearted meaning. It is used to describe a situation where someone has a place to themselves, free from supervision or interruption. This is most commonly used to describe a time when children or teenagers are home alone, often referred to as having a “sturmfreie Bude” (storm-free apartment).
